Imari Birds Paperweight

August 9, 2012

Originally designed as an ornament on 13 count canvas, this paperweight (painted on 18) is an elegant addition to my desk. Its jewel tones, subtle sparkle, and Japanese inspiration make me happy every time I see it.

Finished with a 1 3/4” ribbon, it stands almost 2 inches tall.

The distinctive shape is in between a circle and an oval. To set off the edge, I stitched a gold Kreinik ribbon “braid”, which nestles just inside the finishing gold braid.

Materials included silk (Splendor and Baroque), Ultra Sprinkles, Ribbon floss, and Hex beads.

It could also be painted on 16 count canvas.

Measurements: On 13: 4 3/4” x 4 1/2”, on 18: 3 1/2” x 3 1/4”

If you enjoy stitching these birds as a hanging ornament, you might also enjoy stitching a companion piece— the Dragon Fan. It measures 6 3/4” x 4 3/4” on 13 count, and 5” x 3 1/2 “ on 18, and looks fabulous finished with a long tassel hanging from the bottom.
